In week one we formed our group. Our group at the time consisted of 3 people, Matthew, myself and Nasima when we made our preliminary task. The first preliminary task didn't go to plan so we quickly made a new preliminary task. In the preliminary task, due to lack of time management me and Nasima took the role of the actors since we didn't have time to find any, Matthew had the role of being cameraman and we all had the opportunity to direct however Nasima was the main director. Our preliminary task was to mainly focus on shot-reverse-shots, the 180 degree rule and match on action. To edit we used iMovie. After completing the preliminary task we had to analyse it and Nikita had also joined our group after completing the task.
Week 2:
This was when we officially started research. We first had to come up with the name and logo of our production company. We all decided on the name 'Beaconhills' mainly because it just sounds so mysterious and we thought it had a nice ring to it. We came up with initial ideas and then also created our ident. In my initial logo ideas you can see I thought of 'Red Bridge' as well but I still thought that 'Beaconhills' is better. Once we finalised the name of our production company we created a production company email and a blogger account. We also started planning our shot by shot remake, we first decided to the opening scene of Revenge Of The Bridesmaids but we later realised that although it looked simple, none of us really had much experience and found it extremely difficult.
Week 3:
In this week we were slightly behind in doing our shot by shot remake, we decided to do the opening scene of Footloose, it was quite easy since it really only had one type of shot and since my group and I didn't have much time we thought it was best to do that. Just do make things easier, I had created a shot list before hand to make it more easier and quicker for us to film. I also analysed the opening scene of Wild Child in terms of MECS to gain a better understanding on what an opening scene includes and to not get confused and make mistakes since a common problem is that most people would turn it into a trailer or short film. I researched the importance of genre. We also decided on which genre to go with, we had two options, thriller or sports drama. We chose sports drama over a thriller because we thought its a genre not done by many people so it makes us stand out if done well. I also analysed a student made film opening to see what they did well and what they could've improved on and make sure we don't make those mistakes either.
Week 4:
I then analysed two opening scenes within my chosen genre in terms of MECS just like the way I did Wild Child. I did this to gain a further understanding on what my opening scene will need to include to make it obvious to the audience that it's a sports drama, so I analysed Southpaw and McFarland, USA to see what are the conventions within a sports drama.
Week 5:
I looked at story and narrative. I looked at Levi Strauss's theory of binary opposites in particular and the conventions of my genre. I also looked at representation, I looked at ethnicity in particular.
Week 6:
In week 6 I researched about any key directors within sports drama and I found a director named John G. Avildsen who directed one of the greatest sports drama films, Rocky.
Week 7:
During this week we initially started our planning. In this week we all each came up with two initial ideas which was a small plot and potential titles. Then we had to write out a script from one of our initial ideas, the one we thought which was best out of the two. Before actually writing the script we had to look at the conventions of a script so we annotated the opening scene of a real script to gain a better understanding on how to write a script and what to include. Then we presented our scripts to our group and discussed on whose script we should use for our opening. We all agreed on Nikita's script because it was the most doable and we all felt as if we could really connect and understand the characters.
Week 8:
During this week we annotated Nikita's script in case of any changes and to make sure it follows our genre conventions. Once that was done Nikita had completed the final script.
Week 9:
During this week, my job was to research about Institutions whilst Matthew researched the classification part of the task. I found Entertainment Film Distributors because they distribute independent films and have also distributed sports dramas too. We also looked at job roles and decided what job we will all take. My role was sound designer, Nikita's was production designer, Nasima was directing and Matthew was the camera operator, we all decided to be editors. We all then had to research within our roles as well.
week 10:
In this week we did the script breakdowns. We analysed the script even further and in terms of sound since I am sound designer. We also made the storyboard using celtx.
Week 11:
In this week we did our location and technical recce. for our location recce we went to 3 places for our doctors scene and two for our doctors scene. After looking at how appropriate the locations are in terms of looks we also looked at if they were appropriate in terms of lighting and sound.
Week 12:
In this week we did our casting. We had a few people come in and audition for us from which we chose the best suited for our characters. We chose Baqer Abboud as our main character because he fits the characters description perfectly, we chose Mohnish Mulgi as our doctor because he had the looks for the part and we chose Mishal Samgi as our coach because of his style, he looks old enough to play the part.
Week 13:
Once we chose our actors and locations we went for a test shoot to see if the locations work and to see if the actors are comfortable in front of a camera, unfortunately our doctor was a no show so I filled in his part. We also had to test out our shots and angles and also to make sure there aren't any difficulties for when we actually film. The location we were actually in was actually really echoey but it wasn't something we could control due to the large spacing.
Week 14:
We edited the test shoot.
Week 15:
What my job this week was to do the release forms and get the signed. I had created a actors release form and a location release form.
Week 16:
------
Week 17:
During this week I made the production schedule and call sheet.
Week 18:
After getting everything finalised we started the shoot. Before the shoot I made sure we had lots of copies of the script, shooting script and call sheet just to be prepared. Everything was going smoothly and according to plan, however the lighting seemed too bright but we were able to control it, little did we know it was actually because of the exposure, we didn't find out until we looked at all the footage on the macs, the footage was really grainy and we were unable to fix it.
Week 19:
We filmed our opening all over again due to the footage being so grainy, this time we made sure that the exposure was neutral and that everything runs smoothly. Unfortunately our doctor was again a no show so Nasima took on the spot.
Week 20:
We started editing our footage and by the end of the week we had to hand in our rough cut. It was my first time using premier pro which was extremely difficult, thankfully I had group members to help and we managed to get it in.
Week 21:
We finished editing our final cut and started on our evaluation questions.
